How Decentralized Finance (DeFi) Replaces Traditional Intermediaries
How AMMs, lending markets, and on-chain settlement substitute for brokers and banks—and which risks those intermediaries used to absorb.

From institutional balance sheets to composable contracts
Traditional finance routes value through intermediaries: brokers match trades, banks hold deposits, clearinghouses manage settlement risk, and custodians safeguard assets. Decentralized finance (DeFi) replaces many of those roles with smart contracts that anyone can call if they pay gas and meet coded conditions.
A DEX AMM replaces the dealer’s inventory with a liquidity pool. Lending protocols replace loan officers with collateral ratios and oracle prices. Stablecoin issuers and DAOs add governance layers. The user interface may look like a fintech app, but settlement is on a public ledger.
“Replaces” does not mean “eliminates human risk.” Devs upgrade proxies, multisig signers pause markets, and front-ends can censor geographies. DeFi reduces the need for a trusted matching broker; it does not remove software or governance risk.
Core building blocks users actually touch

What traditional intermediaries still did better
Banks reverse fraudulent card payments; blockchains do not chargeback signed transfers. Brokers provide best-execution obligations and insurance frameworks that vary by jurisdiction; DeFi offers transparency and self-help tools instead. KYC/AML compliance sits with CEX VASPs more than with permissionless pools.
For fiat on/off-ramps, identity, and customer support, centralized venues remain practical—start with first CEX setup. Many users blend models: earn or trade on-chain, cash out via regulated entities.

A sober adoption path
Learn approvals, simulations, and revocation before chasing yield. Use small sizes on reputable protocols. Prefer understanding AMMs and liquidity pools over copying Telegram trade calls.
Keep tax and records as you would with brokers—crypto records. Self-custody means you are your own back office.
Bottom line: DeFi replaces intermediaries with programmable escrow and open settlement. The surplus is access and transparency; the cost is personal operational security and accepting code as a counterparty.
Composability, MEV, and the new intermediary class
DeFi protocols compose like money Legos: a lending position can collateralize another strategy, which can loop into a liquidity pool. Composability accelerates capital efficiency and correlated failures. When one oracle or stablecoin wobbles, liquidations can cascade across venues that integrated the same dependency.
Maximal extractable value searchers, solvers, and builders form a new intermediary layer around public mempools and block construction. Users still avoid a stockbroker, yet they may pay invisible costs through worse fills. Private orderflow and intent-based trading try to renegotiate that trade-off—with new trust assumptions.
Front-end operators, RPC providers, and fiat ramps remain practical choke points. Decentralized settlement does not automatically decentralize discovery or cash-out. A resilient personal stack mixes self-custodied DeFi for on-chain work with regulated venues for fiat, each with explicit risk labels in your notes.
When comparing “DeFi yield” to bank interest, normalize for insurance, recourse, and operational burden. Higher rates usually price missing protections—not free alpha from disintermediation alone. Keep that framing whenever a dashboard shows triple-digit APY.
